#8 Oklahoma Sooners

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on August 30, 2010

Offense
This group was snake bit in 2009 as Oklahoma was devastated by injuries. Sam Bradford was out for most the season and stars Demarco Murray and Ryan Broyles battled injuries throughout the year. Considering he was only a freshman, I thought Landry Jones did a great job stepping in for Bradford. He threw for nearly 3,200 yards with 27 TDs. With a year of experience under his belt, I think Jones has a chance to get into the Heisman trophy picture.

A healthy Demarco Murray and Ryan Broyles should allow this team emulate the 2008 version that averaged 51 points a game!!! I look for Demarco Murray to have a big season and Ryan Broyles to lead the race for Biletnikoff award. The offensive line is stacked as well as Oklahoma returns 8 on the two deep with starting experience. OC Kevin Wilson is sleeping very well at night with all this talent at his disposal.

Defense
The Sooner defense does have some questions since they lose 1st round draft choice Gerald McCoy from the defensive line and LB starts Ryan Reynolds and Keenan Clayton. However, this group is still extremely talented.

3rd Team All-American Jeremy Beal is back as are his team leading 11 sacks. Last season Beal became the first Sooner ever to record 3 sacks in two different games. While there are losses in the LB corps, the coaching staff is very high on sophomore Ronnell Lewis who started the bowl game as a true freshman and finished with 22 tackles. MLB Tom Wort torn his ACL last year but is also highly touted.

The secondary for Oklahoma will carry this defense though. They lose CBs Dominque Franks and Brian Jackson but reload with highly touted freshman Gabe Lynn and Kevin Brent who are coming off redshirt seasons. Former UGA defensive coordinator Willie Martinez steps in to the role as secondary coach for the Sooners after being relieved of his duties as DC for the Dawgs. Despite his lack of success in Athens, Willie Martinez was a great hire for Bob Stoops and is one of the great secondary teachers today.

Overall
Despite his recent failures in BCS bowls, Bob Stoops is still one of the best football coaches in America. He won a national title in 2000 in just his second season, and has played for 3 more BCS titles.

The Sooner schedule is difficult in 2010 because they play 9 teams that played in bowls in 09. However, this group is deep and talented. Due to the injuries, Oklahoma played 9 true freshman. This will pay off this season. Once again, expect The Red River Shootout to decide the Big 12 South and a possible berth in the national title game.
