Can He Close the Deal?

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on June 18, 2011

I judge greatness in golf my own way.  Most prognosticators look at major championship totals in determining who is the best ever in golf.  But it’s more than the a sheer total.  It’s about diversity in the major titles.

Here’s what I mean.  To be truly great you must be able to win major titles on a Masters, U.S. Open, and British Open style courses.  For example, Phil Mickelson is a perfect fit for Augusta National.  His long driving and all or none approach is perfect for the risk rewards that the Masters offers.  But his style doesn’t fit well typically in a U.S. Open where precision and patience are key.  Nor does it fit at a British Open where Mickelson’s lack of a bump and run game have prevented him from claiming Europe’s biggest prize.  Call me crazy but Mickelson isn’t truly great in my book.

Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, and Tom Watson all have won all three major titles.  All but Watson won the career grand slam by winning the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and P.G.A Championship.

This brings us to Rory McIlroy.  With his masterful round Friday he became the first golfer in history to reach -13 at a U.S. Open.  He accomplished that feat in just the 2nd round,  afeat unheard on modern U.S. Open style courses.  However, a double bogey at 18 caused the young Irishman to finish at -11 six shots ahead of 2009 P.G.A. Champion Y.E. Yang.

There is no doubt McIlroy will not sleep well tonight.  His double bogey had to bring about nightmares from his final round at Augusta where he blew 3 shot lead en route to a final round 80.

McIlroy has the ability to become one of the greatest ever.  And by great, I mean the “truly great”.  His has proven he can play on any of the Masters, U.S. Open, and British Open style courses as he held the first round lead at the most recent of all three of those championship.  An amazing accomplishment for a 22 year old!

Can the Rory close the deal?  This will his third shot in less than a year, and cannot imagine him recovering easily from another blown opportunity.  His game is breathtaking.  I think his game is far better than Tiger at this same just because of his excellence in all three phases.  Woods didn’t become great around the greens until he was 25 when he accomplished “The Tiger Slam”.  What McIlroy does not have at 22 is Tiger’s mental game.  If he did Rory would be going for his 3rd major title in less than a year.

McIlroy must close the deal Sunday in order to become the next Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Tom Watson.  If not, he may just become the next Greg Norman.  A gentleman who had the talent of “true greatness” but could not ever close the deal.
