Cardinals May Still Get Pujols Deal Done

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on February 16, 2011

All appeared lost earlier this week regarding a new deal for Albert Pujols before the season started.  However, it appears there may be a new breakthrough in the negotations.

Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman is reporting that St. Louis has 8 year deal on the table for Pujols just south of $30 million per season.  This deal if accepted would clearly make Pujols’ baseball highest paid player.  But, the key is whether Pujols will accept by tomorrow or would rather test the market after this year.

Despite the $30 million per year offer by the Cardinals, Pujols may actually get more money by testing the market.  The big players such as the Yankees and Red Sox are sure to be players, but the biggest interest is coming from the Chicago Cubs.

This is a perfect scenerio for Pujols.  Interest by Chicago would likely force St. Louis to getting in a bidding war not only to keep their prized player but also to avoid a public embarrassment for losing Pujols to their hated rivalry.

It will all be interesting to see if anything happens tomorrow.  If not expect an even more thrilling offseason for Pujols’ services.
