At noon today the New York Mets will announce that Carlos Beltran has been traded to the San Francisco Giants.  The Mets’ trading Beltran has been expected for weeks due to his impending free agency at the end of the 2011 season. 

The key for the Mets in this deal was to get a young starter pitching to build their depth for the future.  They did this by receiving the Giants 2010 first round pick in Zach Wheeler.  Wheeler is project as 1 or 2 starter, and the Mets needed this type of young starter in their rotation.

However, if I were a Mets fan I would be a little skeptical of this deal.  The Giants are fantastic at scouting pitching.  In my book they are the best in baseball.  They have homegrown talents Tim Lincecum, Madison Bumgarder, Jonathan Sanchez, and Matt Cain.  Everyone are solid rotation guys that came up through the Giants minor league system.  This organization knows what good pitching looks like.  So why were the Giants willing to give up a first rounder in Zack Wheeler for a two month rental in Carlos Beltran?  A very good question for the Mets organization to answer.

Beltran will help the Giants immediately.  He is used to being a rental, as he was during the 2005 season when the Houston Astros went to the World Series.  He also an excellent clubhouse guy and will prove to be another strong leader for the Giants down the stretch.  Here’s an example, realizing that a trade was about to go down Beltran took every Mets player out to eat at Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse in Cincinatti.  Beltran is a huge pickup for the Giants even it’s only two months.

This NFL is coming.  It will open Monday.  Free agency will begin Wednesday.  Yes, there are a lot of questions out there.  Did the owners jump the gun too quickly by having a press conference announcing the completion of a deal?  How upset are the players about the owners’ PR move, and do the players have a clear understanding of what’s in the proposal?

I don’t have all of those answers.  But, I do believe we are seeing a lot of grandstanding.  I also expect the players will ratify the agreement this weekend and the NFL will be back open.  This is not major league baseball where there is an out of touch owner clinging to outdated traditions.  It is also not a league where the majority of its players can afford to sit out as long as possible.  The majority of NFL players are not millioniares.  They must play to support their families, and the union realizes this. 

The NFL is also run by a true pro in Roger Goodell.  He understands the importance of his product and knows the ratings mecca he has created over the last five years.

So listen to the showmanship on both sides through the weekend.  But when you’re head hits the pillow Sunday evening you will wake up to the NFL open for business.

Prior to the All-Star Break, I wrote in these pages that the Pittsburgh Pirates were here to stay.  As the season goes along I am more and more vindicated. 

With last night’s 1-0 win, the Pirates are a half game up on Milwaukee in the NL Central.  And they are winning the way they must….with pitching.  The club has an ERA lead of an entire run in the NL Central. 

The fans are buying in too.  There were over 22,000 in attendance last night in a midweek game against the Reds shows how much this fan base is buying in.  The Pirates have always had a great fanbase.  They are proud historic franchise when arguably the best new ballpark in all of baseball.  This will continue to grow.

Great hitting comes and go.  But, if you can pitch you will contend to the end.  And yes, the Pittsburgh Pirates will be involved all the way to October.

We all like to guess who will win the next major title.  Will it be Tiger, McIlroy, Mickelson, or even Westwood?  But no one guesses a young amateur from Austraila by the name of Tom Lewis.

What a story!  The young man played with 5 time Open Championship winner Tom Watson.  What a treasure that had to be for the youngster who was actually named of after Watson.  He has a older brother Jack who was named after the great Jack Nicklaus.

Lewis fired a 5 under 65 to tie Thomas Bjorn for the first round lead.  Lewis was stoic.  In  his press conference he was very confident feeling he can play lynx golf with anyone in the world.  Don’t count this youngster out! 

The only person happier than Lewis after his round was Watson himself, who was smiling from ear to ear as he shook Lewis’ hand on 18.

It’s been nearly 20 years since the Pittsburgh Pirates have been this good, but here they are.  The Bucos are 4 games over .500, 2nd in the NL Central, and are only 1.5 games out of first place!  You heard that right, the Pirates are nipping at the heels of the St. Louis Cardinals.  Also, don’t buy into the arguments that this Pittsburgh team is some kind of fluke who will crash and burn.  That is simply not the case.

Pittsburgh is for real.  They have one of the best young starts in the game in OF Andrew McCutchen who was dissed big time by not being invited to the All Star Game.  Also, don’t discount the free agent signing of Matt Diaz who is hard nosed do what it takes player that was the glue on the Atlanta Braves team for so many years.

 The strength of this team has been the starting rotation led by Charlie Morton and Kevin Correia, who is tied with the league lead in wins at 11.  This team has built throught the draft and trades, which is finally beginning to pay off.  The Nate McLouth deal was huge for the Pirates as it landed them Charlie Morton while McLouth has been mediocre in his stint with the Braves. 

Also, don’t discount the hiring of Clint Hurdle as manager.  The Rockies absolutely panicked when they went through a down year in 2008.  He should have never been fired.  He is one of the best teachers of hitting in the game and his success in Pittsburgh is proving his worth.

Bettors on the Pirates are also making big $$$!  If you bet $100 on every game on the Pirates you’d be up $1,338 this year.  The Pirates are a low market ball club, and the betting public does not believe they will hang around with this record much longer considering they haven’t made the playoffs since 1992.  So expect for there to be value for Pirates bettors as the season moves along.  If you are smart you will stick with the Pirates.

Can you believe it!  A team with the proud tradition of the Los Angeles Dodgers has found themselves in this much financial turmoil.  This is not the Florida Marlins or Tampa Bay Rays.  This is the Los Angeles F#% Dodgers!  The team of “The Duke”,  Koufax,  and Drysdale.  It’s hard to believe something like this could happen to such a proud franchise, but that’s what happened when your organization is run by the likes Frank McCourt. 

Over the last few months Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig has tried to wrestle control of the 120 year old franchise.  This bankruptcy filing is a direct challenge to that authority.  McCourt is trying to by time to shore of his situation.  He still owes millions to the team’s current payroll and over $20 million to former Dodger Manny Ramirez.

The hope this is that the bankruptcy court will order MLB to take the franchise over.  There are too much many promises young players on this roster such as Clayton Kershaw, Matt Kemp, and Andre Either.  The once proud fanbase has deserted this team in droves as attendance is way down.   People are just not going to fork over hard earned money to fund Mr. McCourt’s outfit. 

Bud Selig must win control.  It’s in the best interest of the Dodgers and all of Major League Baseball.
