Can He Close the Deal?

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on June 18, 2011

I judge greatness in golf my own way.  Most prognosticators look at major championship totals in determining who is the best ever in golf.  But it’s more than the a sheer total.  It’s about diversity in the major titles.

Here’s what I mean.  To be truly great you must be able to win major titles on a Masters, U.S. Open, and British Open style courses.  For example, Phil Mickelson is a perfect fit for Augusta National.  His long driving and all or none approach is perfect for the risk rewards that the Masters offers.  But his style doesn’t fit well typically in a U.S. Open where precision and patience are key.  Nor does it fit at a British Open where Mickelson’s lack of a bump and run game have prevented him from claiming Europe’s biggest prize.  Call me crazy but Mickelson isn’t truly great in my book.

Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, and Tom Watson all have won all three major titles.  All but Watson won the career grand slam by winning the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and P.G.A Championship.

This brings us to Rory McIlroy.  With his masterful round Friday he became the first golfer in history to reach -13 at a U.S. Open.  He accomplished that feat in just the 2nd round,  afeat unheard on modern U.S. Open style courses.  However, a double bogey at 18 caused the young Irishman to finish at -11 six shots ahead of 2009 P.G.A. Champion Y.E. Yang.

There is no doubt McIlroy will not sleep well tonight.  His double bogey had to bring about nightmares from his final round at Augusta where he blew 3 shot lead en route to a final round 80.

McIlroy has the ability to become one of the greatest ever.  And by great, I mean the “truly great”.  His has proven he can play on any of the Masters, U.S. Open, and British Open style courses as he held the first round lead at the most recent of all three of those championship.  An amazing accomplishment for a 22 year old!

Can the Rory close the deal?  This will his third shot in less than a year, and cannot imagine him recovering easily from another blown opportunity.  His game is breathtaking.  I think his game is far better than Tiger at this same just because of his excellence in all three phases.  Woods didn’t become great around the greens until he was 25 when he accomplished “The Tiger Slam”.  What McIlroy does not have at 22 is Tiger’s mental game.  If he did Rory would be going for his 3rd major title in less than a year.

McIlroy must close the deal Sunday in order to become the next Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Tom Watson.  If not, he may just become the next Greg Norman.  A gentleman who had the talent of “true greatness” but could not ever close the deal.

Reyes Inspires Mets!!

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on June 8, 2011

Since Fred Wilpon opened his big mouth and said the Mets may have to deal both Mets SS Jose Reyes and 3B David Wright, the Mets fans have responded in uproar and support.

However, the support has been the most vocal for the 28 year old Reyes.  Reyes speed and energy has always been popular with the Mets fan base.  He wears his emotions on his sleeve and sturs the fans at Citi Field to make noise to get behind the team.

Since Wilpon’s comments Reyes has responded.   Last night against the Milwaukee Brewers Reyes belted his league leading 11th triple of the season as Mets knocked off the Brewers 2-1.

Reyes is not only putting up a good season, according to ESPN.com’s Buster Olney is having a MVP type season.  Reyes is leading the league in batting average at .339.  He’s got 30 extra base hits already and is on pace for 49 doubles 30 triples and 3 homers.

I realize the Mets are hurting due to the Bernie Madolf scandal and must find ways to cut costs.  However, there are other ways to due so without dealing a force such as Jose Reyes.

Spurrier's Pay Plan Embarrassing

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on June 3, 2011

Steve Spurrier’s pay proposal was one of the lowest things I’ve ever seen in sports period.  Spurrier’s proposed that SEC coaches be allowed to pick 70 random players from their football team to get a $300 per game payment.  When the proposal was presented all the ADs in the room laughed due to its sillyness and blatant violation of every NCAA rule in the book.  As Georgia head coach Mark Richt asked “How do you deal with the other 50 players on scholarship and are on scout team?”  “There not as talented, but they work just as hard?”  How about the Title IX implications?  There’s no way you can get away with paying players in a men’s sport without doing the same for female ones.

However, it wasn’t so funny to snake oil salesman such as Nick Saban, Gene Chizik, Derek Dooley, Houston Nutt, Les Miles, and Will Muschamp who voted for it.  These guys are so desperate to get a recruiting advantage so they can tell how recruits they support paying players and old heartless Mark Richt does not.

You would think seven millionaires would be the ultimate professionals and conduct themselves in such a manner.  Instead they are nothing worse than slimy used car salesman looking at any way to stab their customers (recruits) in the back to promote their own sleazy careers.  It’s utterly despicable.

Mike Brown to Lead the Lakers

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on May 25, 2011

Well that didn’t take long.

The Los Angeles Lakers have reached an agreement in principle with former Cleveland Cavalier head coach Mike Brown to replace Phil Jackson as their new head coach.

The Lakers moved very quickly and especially wanted someone outside of the Phil Jackson mold.  Brown’s deal is believed to be 4 years and up to $18 million.

As soon as Brown is introduced he will have to massage the ego of star guard Kobe Bryant, who openly advocated for assistant coach Bryan Shaw to replace Jackson.  When Brown was in Cleveland it was obvious that Lebron James would take nights off.  With the Lakers hiring Brown instead of Shaw will Kobe have a similar lazy attitude towards play?

For Brown’s sake let’s hope not or his fate will end the same way as it did in Cleveland.

Will Auburn Sign Russell Wilson?

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on May 24, 2011

How about this for a shocker of the day?

There are rumblings on ESPN and Auburn recruiting sites that Russell Wilson is visiting Auburn today.  Wilson, who has signed a minor league baseball contract with the Colorado Rockies, has one season of eligibility remaining in football.

The recruitment of Wilson does make sense.  Auburn cannot be happy with the prospects of Barrett Trotter starting at QB in the fall.  The Tigers do have highly regarded prep signee Kiehl Frazer coming in, but it’s rare that a true freshman at QB can make much of a positive impact without making too many mistakes.

This leads us to the Wilson visit.  Wilson would be an outstanding player for Auburn.  He won’t be Cam Newton, but he is arguably better as a passer and a very capable runner.

The only question remains is how much is Auburn paying Wilson?    Cam received somewhere in the 200 -250K range.  Inflation has set in from last year so I would expect a $275K signing bonus could be in the works here.  However, since the NCAA is closely monitoring Auburn, my money is on a nice $5 million insurance policy purchased by Jimmy Rayne and “Yella Wood” in case poor ole Russell ends his baseball career due to a football injury.

Is it Time to Start Believing in Cleveland?

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on May 24, 2011

Coming into last night I will admit I was a big doubter of the Cleveland Indians.  I realize they had a 29-15 record which was by far the best in baseball.  However, I didn’t believe this team was built for the long run.  Think about it.   Their best offseason acquistion was a washed up Orlando Cabrera who assets to the game, speed and OBP, have declined greatly with his age.  I didn’t believe much in Manny Acta either especially considering the improvements Jim Riggleman has made in DC with the Nationals.  Finally, it was only May 23rd and Cleveland was opening a three game set with Boston. This begins a stretch for the Indians against some of the best teams in baseball.  After hosting Boston, Cleveland travels to Tampa to face the Rays, travel to Toronto to play the Blue Jays who are currently alive and well in the AL East race.  Then comes a four game homestand against the Texas Rangers, who just returned Josh Hamilton from the DL.  After a breather against the Twins, the Indians then go to Yankee Stadium and Detroit.  So, I thought and still have some belief that this May-June stretch would do them in.

But after last night’s come from behind win against Boston, I am starting to buy in to this Cleveland team.

There was absolutely no reason for them to win last night’s game.  The Red Sox are the hottest team in baseball.  Since April 16 they are 13 games over .500 and right in the AL East race only 1 game behind Tampa.  But Cleveland rallied with 2 runs in the 8th off of stud reliever Daniel Bard capped by a game winning double by Asdrubal Cabrera.

Something special appears to be developing with these Indians that is beyond basic stats and data.  With rallies like what took place Monday night, it’s getting hard to not believe in Cleveland.

Haslem Sparks Heat

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on May 19, 2011

The Miami Heat needed rebounding and they needed toughness.  This was recipe for success after an embarrassing first round loss to the Chicago Bulls in the Eastern Conference finals.

Who provided this recipe?  Lebron? Bosh? D-Wade?  While Lebron and Wade cashed in with 29 and 24 points respectively, it was Udonis Haslem who only played seven minutes of basketball since his November foot injury.

Haslem was outstanding giving the Heat the toughness they absolutely needed to match that of Chicago’s Jokim Noah and Taj Gibson.  Haslem finished with 20 points and was an absolute force around the goal.  Big win for the Heat as they got a much needed split and are clearly in the driver’s seat for the remainder of the series.

Here is some highlights of Haslem’s great performance last night.   video-udonis-haslem-is-alive
