Pat Knight Out at Texas Tech

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on March 7, 2011

Well it appears Bobby Knight’s son didn’t work out as well in his attempt to replace his father as head coach at Texas Tech.  Pat Knight was fired today as head coach at Texas Tech.  Knight will coach out the string in the Big 12 tournament.

It is speculated that one Billy “Clyde” Gillespi could be high on the consideration list.  That will indeed be an interesting development moving forward.

Under the Radar Gators Might Win it All

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on March 7, 2011

If you follow my twitter feed at twitter.com/JamesOWB you know that I am very high on the Florida Gators.  I think this team is underrated and ready for a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.  How deep?  I believe this team has what it takes to win its 3rd National Title in six years.

The most important aspect of a team trying to making deep run in March is steady backcourt and particularly point guard play.  The Gators fit this description with a solid tandem in Erving Walker and sharpshooter Kenny Boyington.

Having a solid backcourt is far more important than having a solid frontcourt, but the frontcourt sure is solid in Gainesville.  Center Vernon Macklin is one of the most dominant post players in college basketball and forward Chandler Parsons is the perfect inside-outside combination.

In this era college basketball any experience is an added intangible considering the NBA rule which allows players to leave after just one season in school.  More than any other program, Florida has tons of experience.  Macklin and Parsons are both seniors while Walker and Boyton are junior guards.  Plus, Florida is red hot.  They blew through SEC West champion Alabama on Tuesday and won at  Vanderbilt by 10 Saturday to claim the SEC crown.

This team is red hot, and I expect a deep run when March Madness begins in a little over a week.

Note from the NFL Combine

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on February 28, 2011

Yesterday I spent more time watching the combine that I probably ever have since the NFL Network began showing the even live.  What a day it was with numerous big time candidates really helping and hurting their cause.

The guy I was most impressed with was Alabama Crimson Tide WR Julio Jones.  He weighed in at 6’3 225 and just floored everyone with his 4.39 40 time!  He also leaped out of Lucas Oil Field with his 11.3 broad jump.

Before the combine it was nearly a slam dunk that Georgia WR AJ Green was the number one receiver on most draft boards.  I still believe that’s case despite Julio’s impressive performance.  However, Jones may have jumped into a top ten selection.

One draftee that may have hurt his cause yesterday was Cam Newton.  His was impressive during with his 40 time running a 4.58 and looking like an absolute specimen with his cutoff Under Armour shirt.  However, he really struggled throwing the football.  Newton consistently sailed the 10 yard out.  He also had a difficult time completing fly pattern 50 yards down the field.  It was speculated before the draft that Newton was raw and was somewhat of what a project.  Sunday’s performance only enhanced that notion.

A couple of QBs did look good yesterday.  In particular Andy Dalton and Ryan Mallet.  I personally feel Dalton is the steal of the draft.  He has the perfect size and threw numerous tight spirals while hitting his receivers on target throughout the day.  Mallet surpised no one by being extremely accurate and showing off his gunslinger arm.  However, I’m not sure I would want this immature kid being the face of my franchise.

Alabama RB Mark Ingram looked good yesterday, however I really believe he needs to get back to the 220-225 lb range in order to be very effective on the pro level because of his height.

Other players looking good were Nebraksa WR Niles Paul and LSU WR Terrance Tolliver.  Watch out for Syracuse RB Delone Carter.  He has excellent size and is built like a tank.  He also showed great speed by running a 4.53 40 time.  He could be the Arian Foster of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Guillen and Jenks May Come to Blows

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on February 26, 2011

It’s really getting heated between Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen and former White Sox and now Boston closer Bobby Jenks.

Check this story out from Mark Gonzalez.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Manager Ozzie Guillen issued a warning to disgruntled former White Sox closer Bobby Jenks to concentrate solely on Boston and not repeating verbal shots at the Sox and Guillen’s middle son Oney.

“If Oney said everything he knows about Bobby Jenks, it wouldn’t be a pretty thing,” Guillen said in a calm tone after Saturday’s workout.

“I respect his wife. I respect his kids. I’m not even mad. I wish I was mad about it because I will rip his throat (out).

Nevertheless, Guillen responded directly after Jenks told the Tribune on Thursday that he was tired of the bickering between Guillen and the front office last season and referred to Oney Guillen as a victim of “middle child syndrome.”

Oney Guillen, who tweeted some comments critical of Jenks’ personal issues after Jenks ripped the manager in December, declined to comment on Jenks’ latest comments.

But Ozzie Guillen issued his threat during a seven-minute response.

“That’s sad because it’s coming from him,” Guillen said. “That surprises me. Everybody in this organization did a lot of great things for him. Did he pitch good for us? Yes, very, very good. But in the meanwhile, just worry about setting up some games over there. Just worry about Boston, don’t worry about the White Sox.”

“Too bad that all the stuff we had between me and Kenny interrupted his career because he did a lot of bad things last year,” Guillen quipped. “We lied for him, we protected him. I’m the first manager in the history of baseball to give a guy a week off to take care of his kids when his father-in-law was sick. It wasn’t even his wife, it even wasn’t a (family) member. But it was out of respect I have for his family. I sent him home because he had to babysit his kids because his father-in-law was sick. I don’t think any manager is doing that. But coming from him, I expect that.”

Guillen wished that Jenks, who wasn’t tendered a contract with the Sox this winter, would focus solely on the Red Sox, who gave him a two-year, $12 million contract to serve as a set-up man.

“We don’t miss him,” Guillen said. “You ask 30 guys in there. By the way, I was asking for his phone number to talk him to about it, and nobody had his phone number. None of his (former) teammates had his phone number. That you can tell what happened. But (criticism of ) me, that’s fine. He wasn’t talking about the ballclub, he was talking about Ozzie and Kenny (Williams). I respect that.

“Thank God he wasn’t talking about the club. If Bobby was taking about the club, I would have been everywhere on ESPN because I will rip his guts. But he was talking about me. I can take that. Just be careful of what you say about Oney because Oney will say stuff he’s not supposed to be saying. That’s just a warning for him just in case somebody don’t call him. Just stay away and don’t name Oney for this because it will be pretty ugly.”

Guillen said that Jenks’ unreliability because of family issues and health was one of the biggest reasons the Sox finished second in the American League Central last year.

“He showed up once a week to pitch,” Guillen said. “We were loyal to him, played him. I was a very bad manager because I kept him as my closer when he couldn’t (close). He’s got to look himself in the mirror. Too bad. I still love his kids and wife.

Guillen joked that he was keeping a low profile and wanted spring training to run smoothly.

“If that happened two years ago or last year, I can make a book about this kid,” Guillen said. “A book, not one page, I can make a book. And I feel bad for him. I feel sad he thinks that way about me. Very sad because he knows I can easily, easily kill this kid in the paper. He’s not going to win.”

All of a Sudden Cam is Speechless

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on February 25, 2011

After slitting in his own throat by claiming he was going to be a NFL icon, Newton is all of a sudden speechless.  Newton refused to address the media at the opening day of the NFL combine in Indianapolis.  Many speculate that he may wait and do so tomorrow.  Others think Newton may not speak at all in Indy.

This kid as well as the entire Newton family need a serious image makeover.

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on February 22, 2011

We’ve got a new segment we are going to call NBA ATS Team of the Week.  Every week preferably Monday we will brag on one team that is completely dominating against the spread.  We hope this advice helps you as you made betting decisions during the week.  Hey basketball is not nearly has wagered as football so the info is not as readily available.  By providing you a team that his hot ATS this may help you in your wagering.

Team of the Week

Portland Trail Blazers

The Trail Blazers ended the first half red hot led by LaMarcus Aldridge who averaged 34 points a game the last week.  They finished a blistering 5-0 ATS last week.  What a way to close the first half!  The scary thing about Portland is that they will only get better.  Marcus Camby and Brandon Roy will soon be returning from the injury list.  Watch out for Portand in the 2nd half of the season.  They could get put themselves in a great playoff position and be dangerous come May and June.

Bama Gets Serious Payback from Practical Joke

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on February 17, 2011

AUBURN – Auburn University today confirmed that an herbicide commonly used to kill trees was deliberately applied in lethal amounts to the soil around the Toomer’s Corner live oaks on campus, and there is little chance to save the trees. More information and ongoing updates as to treatment and prognosis are available on this site.

The City of Auburn Police Division is investigating the situation, and the application of this herbicide, known as Spike 80DF, or tebuthiuron, is also governed by state agricultural laws and the Environmental Protection Agency. The university does not use Spike herbicide. There is no reason to suspect any human danger from the herbicide, which manufacturer Dow Chemical says should be applied with proper clothing protection; a typical use of the herbicide is to kill trees along fence lines.

The university learned that a caller to The Paul Finebaum Show, a nationally syndicated radio show based in Birmingham, on Jan. 27, claimed he had applied the herbicide. As a precaution, soil samples were taken the next day and sent to the Alabama State Pesticide Residue Laboratory on campus for analysis. Due to a small fire that occurred in the Alabama lab in December, the tests were sent to the lab at Mississippi State University in Starkville, Miss., to expedite results.

Toomer's Corner

The lowest amount detected was 0.78 parts per million, described by horticulture experts as a “very lethal dose.” The highest amount detected was 51 parts per million, or 65 times the lowest dose. Experts believe a normal application by itself would have been enough to kill the trees, which are estimated to be more than 130 years old.

“We are assessing the extent of the damage and proceeding as if we have a chance to save the trees,” said Gary Keever, an Auburn University professor of horticulture and a member of Auburn’s Tree Preservation Committee. “We are also focused on protecting the other trees and shrubs in Samford Park. At this level the impact could be much greater than just the oaks on the corner, as Spike moves through the soil to a wide area.” Additional tests are being completed to determine the movement and extent of the area affected, Keever said.

The removal process involves digging trenches and applying activated charcoal to absorb the herbicide from the soil and block its progress. A representative from Dow Chemical, which manufactures the herbicide, is advising the university on removal procedures, and expert horticulturalists are also being consulted.

“We will take every step we can to save the Toomer’s oaks, which have been the home of countless celebrations and a symbol of the Auburn spirit for generations of Auburn students, fans, alumni and the community,” said University President Jay Gogue.

Gogue asked members of the Auburn Family to “continue to be ‘All In’ in upholding its reputation for class” and not allow anger to be expressed inappropriately or undeservedly.

“It is understandable to feel outrage in reaction to a malicious act of vandalism,” Gogue said. “However, we should live up to the example we set in becoming national champions and the beliefs expressed in our Auburn Creed. Individuals act alone, not on behalf of anyone or any place, and all universities are vulnerable to and condemn such reprehensible acts.”
