Cardinals May Still Get Pujols Deal Done

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on February 16, 2011

All appeared lost earlier this week regarding a new deal for Albert Pujols before the season started.  However, it appears there may be a new breakthrough in the negotations.

Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman is reporting that St. Louis has 8 year deal on the table for Pujols just south of $30 million per season.  This deal if accepted would clearly make Pujols’ baseball highest paid player.  But, the key is whether Pujols will accept by tomorrow or would rather test the market after this year.

Despite the $30 million per year offer by the Cardinals, Pujols may actually get more money by testing the market.  The big players such as the Yankees and Red Sox are sure to be players, but the biggest interest is coming from the Chicago Cubs.

This is a perfect scenerio for Pujols.  Interest by Chicago would likely force St. Louis to getting in a bidding war not only to keep their prized player but also to avoid a public embarrassment for losing Pujols to their hated rivalry.

It will all be interesting to see if anything happens tomorrow.  If not expect an even more thrilling offseason for Pujols’ services.

Will Sabathia Opt Out?

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on February 15, 2011

After laying off “Capn Crunch” cereal, CC Sabathia is in the best shape of his life.  He’s 30 lbs lighter and appears poised to make the Yankees ultra competitive against the Boston Red Sox this season.

However, is Sabathia really happy in New York?  He appears to be.  You will see him often on the sideline of Nets and Knicks basketball games.  He is very involved in the community doing tons of works for youth program throughout the New York era.  But, as Ian O’Conner from ESPN New York reports Sabathia could opt out of his deal with the Yankees and become a Dodger or even a Met.

Bioterrorism Hits Tuscalossa!

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on February 10, 2011

Don’t mess with the “cow college.”

Auburn fans added a little landscaping with rye grass to the outside of Bryant Denny Stadium. Round-Up has been deployed but no word from Bama how they plan on combating this bio-terrorism.

Wonder Why the Simms Sons are Trouble?

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on February 7, 2011

What a matchup Super Bowl Sunday brought us! Congratulations to the Green Bay Packers, who were clearly the better team in tonight’s game. However, an off the field before the game was a big story too me.

This one involves CBS lead NFL color commenter Phil Simms who was nearly in a physical altercation with ESPN college football analyst Desmond Howard at the Super Bowl festivities. Howard was criticial of Tennessee QB Matt Simms and said that “Simms was one of the worse QBs in the SEC.” Guess old dad Phil didn’t take this so well, but why are we surprised?

Chris Simms was a pure premodona while at Texas. Mack Brown was more than thankful to push him out the door and usher in Major Applewhite who was had far less ability but was twice the leader.

Matt Simms this season for Tennessee had to apologize to the entire football team for ripping the coaching staff for making him the backup to Tyler Bray. The situation was best considering that Simms was likely a cancer on the team. When Simms was replaced, Tennessee went on to win their last four games to become bowl eligible.

So, I know where the Simms boys get their attitude from. But, how you can play them when their father has yet to grow up either.

Signing Day Winners and Losers

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on February 4, 2011

Here’s a great piece to from Scout.com’s Scott Kennedy telling us who were yesterday’s winners and losers on National Signing Day.

Obviously any team finishing in the Top 5 should be considered a winner on Signing Day, but who are some of the less obvious teams who made noise, good and bad to wrap up the Class of 2011?

Winner: #8 Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Yeah he can coach, but can Brian Kelley recruit nationally at Notre Dame? Let’s say this question has been answered. Notre Dame’s defensive line haul alone would be reason to celebrate with three of the nation’s Top 10 defensive ends in Aaron Lynch (6’6/255) of Cape Coral, Fla., Ishaq Williams (6’5/225) of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Stephon Tuitt (6’5/255) of Monroe, Ga. Add a Signing Day decision by Top 10 offensive tackle prospect Troy Niklas (6’5/260) of Anaheim, Calif., and Kelley answered any question about his recruiting prowess.

Loser: #55 Pittsburgh Panthers
Pittsburgh made a risky move by moving on from a proven recruiting head coach like Dave Wannstedt (42-31), and that move backfired when Mike Haywood was dismissed before ever coaching a game. Pittsburgh dropped out of the Top 20 like a rock, settling in the 80’s before Todd Graham was able to come in and stop the bleeding. Pittsburgh had finished in the Top 25 four of the last seven years before its finish out of the Top 50 this year.

Winner: #11 Tennessee Volunteers
Tennessee and Derek Dooley have done a remarkable job of rising from the turmoil that was left behind when first year head coach Lane Kiffen abruptly left for USC. The Vols closed on nearly all of its top targets to finish the year and built a proverbial fence around the state of Tennessee signing three of the four 4-Star rated prospects including jumbo athlete Cameron Clear (6’6/260) of Memphis.

Loser: #43 Mississippi State Bulldogs
It wasn’t supposed to be like this for Mississippi State. The Bulldogs had their best season in years. Their coach seemed like a mortal lock for the mighty Florida Gators but signed an extension instead. Their commitment list was full of instate players and a few out of state gems. Then the wheels came off. Three of the Bullodogs’ top commitments ended up inking with other teams, including wide receiver Nickolas Brassell (6’1/176) and linebacker C.J. Johnson (6’2/235) who added insult to injury by signing with Ole Miss.

Winner: #12 Clemson Tigers
Clemson was having a good year before Signing Day, but with the announcements of two linebacker ranked in the Top 3 at their respective positions, Tiger fans felt like it was Christmas and a Birthday wrapped into one. Stephone Anthony (6’3/220) of Wadesboro, N.C. and Tony Steward (6’1/215) of Saint Augustine, Fla. may have upstaged a talented offensive class that included two Top 10 receivers in Sammy Watkins (6’1/180) and Charone Peake (6’3/175) and the No. 7 running back Mike Bellamy (5’10/190).

Loser: #37 Miami Hurricanes
A coaching change is a common theme amongst the top teams that are normally dependable Top 15 recruiting teams that fell outside of the Top 25, and Miami was no exception. New coach Al Golden did what he could in the short time that he had, specifically keeping stellar defensive line commitment Anthony Chickillo (6’4/235) and adding former USC commitment defensive tackle Jalen Grimble (6’3/255). But no one expects Miami to finish 37th in recruiting, and this year should look like an aberration once Golden gets a full year in Coral Gables.

Winner: #14 Cal Golden Bears
Cal has typically been known for wide open offense and quarterback play under Jeff Tedford, but with the nation’s best defensive line haul, the Golden Bears may develop a new reputation. Viliami Moala (6’3/340) of Sacramento, Calif. is a force. He can push double teams backwards and he can chase down running backs headed for the corner. Cal is bringing in four running backs including Brendon Bigelow (5’10/180) who could be the steal of the class if he can recover from knee injuries.

Loser: #55 UCLA Bruins
The season started with UCLA’s arch-rival having crippling sanctions announced. This was the year UCLA could take a step past USC who has overshadowed them over the last decade. Then the season started. UCLA limped to an uninspiring 4-8 record and replaced both coordinators. Worse, recruits didn’t seemed to prefer playing for a sanctioned USC team. Only Signing Day announcements from 4-Star receiver Devin Lucien (6’0/190), an off again on again signature from offensive tackle Torian White (6’6/280) and 3-Star defensive tackle Kevin McReynolds (6’3/280) kept Signing Day from being a complete disaster for UCLA.

Winner: #18 Texas Tech Red Raiders
Texas Tech closed with as big a bang as anyone on Signing Day, getting decisions and signatures from seven players. Particularly impressive was Texas Tech’s ability to reach out of its normal recruiting area to get two stars of the Keystone State. Athlete Desimon Green (6’5/220) of Clairton, Pa. and linebacker Branden Jackson (6’4/225) of McKeesport, Pa. are 3-Star and 4-Star athletes respectively. The running game should get an infusion of talent as well with three 4-Star running backs including Kenny Williams (5’10/206) of Pflugerville, Texas.

Loser: The Big East
Pittsburgh has already taken its hit discussing the winners and losers, but the Panthers weren’t alone. No team from the Big East finished in the Top 30. Rutgers and Louisville signed respectable classes at No. 31 and No. 36 respectively. Each signed potential stars including 5-Star running back Savon Huggins (6’0/200) of Jersey City, N.J. for Rutgers and quarterback Teddy Bridgewater (6’3/195) of Miami, Fla for Louisville. Recruiting rankings don’t mean everything, but the conferences remaining six members signed only three players rated 4-Stars or better. That’s less than 28 teams.

Whatever Happened to the Fired Car Dealer Packer Fan?

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on January 29, 2011

I’m sure you may have heard this story already, but if not it is worth a glance.

This Packer fan, who lives and works in Chicago, gets fired at his used car dealership for wearing a Packer tie to work the day after Green Bay ends Chicago’s Super Bowl bid.

This is dumb on so many levels, but it really a great story. For the record, I would never buy a car from someone wearing a Florida tie. But regardless, the dude shouldn’t have been fired. Nor should he have worn that tie. Stupidity all the way around.

The good news is, this Packer fan, a father of two, got a job with a Chevy dealership soon thereafter.

Life is funny like that.

Lay Off Jay Cutler!!!!

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on January 26, 2011

First of all, I am not a Jay Cutler guy. The last thing he would be was a quarterback I’d choose in the NFL for my team. That said, I wanted to scream yesterday as the talking heads and pundits around America talked uncontrollably about him not playing the 2nd half of Sunday’s game against the Packers.

The talk started immediately on Sunday as folks sitting at home in their overstuffed sofas, mouth full of chips, began calling him a wimp and a coward. On Monday, it’s all anyone talked or wrote about. A bunch of “Joe 6-packs” calling this NFL QB out for a knee injury. I’ve got two words for that: Busch league.

There are many things that bother me about this situation. First of all, if you watched any of that first half, you saw Cutler getting pounded, just as he did all season long behind one of the worst offensive lines in the league. However, he kept grinding and fighting. Then his knee gets blown (2nd degree sprain/tear, if you’ve never had that then shut up). He goes out and tries to play before halftime, then talks his way onto the field after halftime. His first throw he can’t even plant, short hops an 8 yard pass, and is pulled. The Head Coach made that decision, with his advice coming from the doctors. Lovie Smith thought, correctly so, that his quarterback who can’t plant and throw, needed to come out in order for them to win. Yet Cutler is the one who is hanged for it.

The other thing that is driving me nuts is people talking about the “perception.” Jay Cutler has been the same stoic person since he was at Vandy. It’s just who he is. He’s not your Aaron Rodgers who fist pumps and jumps on his linemen. It’s just not his personality. Brian Ulracher is the vocal leader of the Bears, not Cutler. Yet folks are saying Cutler laid down because he was not fired up on the sideline. If you follow the Bears one bit, you know that it is just his personality. Period. America loves the “Cinderella” comeback story, but what America does not understand is that some of that is put on, and it doesn’t involve a knee. Playing with a broken thumb is not the same as playing with a torn knee.

I played ¾ of a season in high school with two broken toes. It hurt like the devil, but I could still play. Everyone plays football hurt. There’s not a player in the NFL who suits up a game not hurt to some extent. But knees are different. I also had to undergo knee surgery in high school due to a football injury. The knee is that one thing that limits you more than any other injury. I played with a concussion (not smart), broken fingers, and all sorts of ailments. But with the knee, there’s no playing. You can try, but it doesn’t work. Most importantly, it doesn’t give your team the best chance to win.

I understand that I am degressing, almost to the point of a rant. The fact of the matter is, it has driven me crazy to witness folks sit behind a computer or in front of a microphone and bash Jay Cutler for something out of his control. There is ZERO chance Jay Cutler was going to lay down in that situation unless he absolutely had to. You don’t get to that level as an NFL QB and not be a tremendous competitor. It just does not happen. That may be the most absurd part of this whole argument to me. Just put yourself in that mindset if you can. Do you really get to the pinnacle of the NFL not wanting to play? NO! The weak are the ones who don’t make it to the NFL. There are hundreds of quarterbacks in America who have great skills. Only a select few have the drive to get to that upper echelon of starting NFL QB’s.

Jay Cutler was near tears due to frustration of hearing people say these insane things. I can only imagine his pain; to know something that the public doesn’t understand, yet not be able to explain it. Forget the idiots like Deion Sanders who tweet from their home; I guarantee that clown wouldn’t have been playing with a torn MCL. The bottom line is, when you get taken out by the coach and training staff due to a severe knee injury and get hung publicly by it, that is just wrong. Forget the fact that he’s diabetic, and that plays into his stoic nature on the sideline. The bottom line is that everyone, from Mike Ditka to Joe 6-pack, needs to get a life and get over this. We don’t care if you played football hurt, everyone does. But you cannot play quarterback, especially in the NFL, with a 2nd degree sprain on your MCL.

More Proof Of SEC Dominance

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on January 24, 2011

As if the run of MNC’s is not enough proof, a quick look at Mel Kiper’s and Todd McShay’s mock drafts will quickly tell you where the best players are coming from.

Kiper has kids from the SEC going 1-3, and McShay has 5 SEC players going in his top 10.

It seems that as each year passes, the SEC is getting stronger and stronger, pulling away from the pack. Even this year’s NC game, though close in terms of final score, showed an SEC school really dominate the entire game against a team America said was the fastest and most athletic in the country.

I know it’s a forgone conclusion at this point that we are the mecca of college football, but it’s fun to remind ourselves of the blessings we have each fall living in the South. Every single game is full of NFL talent, and simply put, they’re just fun to watch.

Yankees Doing Their Thing

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on January 22, 2011

Well, they are at it again. The New York Yankees have signed Andruw Jones to a one year, $2 million contract for 2011.

Andruw will fill in as a right handed back up to lefty Brett Gardner. He will be a serviceable back up, but being with his 5th team in as many years, a once promising career is now starting to drag out.

Has Andruw Jones had a HOF career?

For me, I say no. I know he won 10 consecutive Gold Gloves, and was a vital part in the Braves organization. He has 407 career round trippers. But a normal person without performance enhancers doesn’t go from 29, 51, 41, 26, 3, 17, 19 home runs over a seven year period. That isn’t quite a Sammy Sosa or Rafeal Palmeiro type jump, but a drastic rise and fall nonetheless.

We can’t say for sure if Andruw did the juice or not. I personally think he did. But either way, becasue of the steriod era, I think a once promising career won’t be recognized in Cooperstown.
