Antonio Cromartie is a Fool

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on January 13, 2011

It is probably not a wise decision if you a cornerback to talk smack to the quarterback whose team shredded you 45-3 a month ago.  It is probably even more foolish realizing this quarterback is the best since Joe Montana.  You don’t step in an ant hill with your foot covered in honey.

Antonio Cromartie calling Tom Brady an a-hole is not going to make his job any easier.  And if the comment doesn’t bother Brady and he doesn’t intentionally target Cromartie, I would be willing to wager the Patriots still get theirs.  New England will still score a heap of points, motivated or not.   But I doubt Brady and the Patriots need any extra motivation for a playoff game.

That is what seperates teams like New England from teams like the Jets, Bengals and Raiders.  Some teams need to talk smack and do crazy things.  The Patriots go out and take care of their business.

But the Jets are used sticking their foot in their mouth.

Anyone, anyone?

Miles Inks New Seven Year Deal

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on January 12, 2011

One day after announcing that he was staying at LSU, Les Miles has inked a new contract.  The deal will run through the 2017 season.  However — no doubt influenced by LSU’s budget woes — Miles’ pay will not increase.

At $3.75 million per season, he’ll probably get by.

The new pact extends Miles’ ties to LSU past the 2014 season laid out in his previous deal.  And additional performance bonuses have been added into the mix.

Speaking with the media today, Miles said, “It was always more about the tenure — for me — than the pay and the annual salary.”

“Certainly it was important that I visit with my alma mater.  Certainly I wish Michigan the very best… but I’m an LSU Tiger, and I will be an LSU Tiger for quite some time.”

Oregon Defense Must Play Disciplined

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on January 10, 2011

The college football season is five weeks old, so for too long tonight’s national title game has been overanalyzed and the Xs and Os discussed.

Who has the upper hand?  Is it Auburn with college football’s most dynamic player in Cam Newton who has the best passing and running combination arguably of any QB in the history of college football.  I believe so.

Newton is near impossible to stop.  I compare him to a pitcher who has a 100 mph fastball and a 80 mpg hook.  In Gus Malzahn’s spread offense he wants Newton to keep the ball and display his power and speed as much as possible.  However, there are times when Newton when fake the run and deliver a strike to one of his talented receivers.  The safeties and LBs typically bite heavy towards the run leaving Newton with a wide open target.  Just like a pitcher with a 100 mph fastball (Newton running) and when you don’t expect here comes the 80 mph hook (Newton faking the run and throwing).  That description fits Cameron Newton to a “T”.

The winner of tonight’s game will be the team who can get one more stop than the other team.  Let’s be honest this should be a shootout.  Auburn ranks 105 th nationally against the pass while Oregon have given up their share of points.  However, if Oregon is going to win they must stay disciplined in their assignment and not overcommit to the run which will allow Newton to torch them in the passing game.  If Oregon can do this, I believe they will have shot.  If not, then the Sears trophy will head to the “Loveliest Village on the Plains”.

Andrew Luck to Return to Stanford

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on January 7, 2011

Just checked twitter to see all the news sources reporting that Andrew Luck has decided to stay in school for his senior redshirt junior season

Personally, I think this is a great move for him.  When you look at success of true pro-style QB’s like Matt Ryan & Sam Bradford (though he was hurt his last season at OU), staying in school didn’t hurt. You do have the flip side of Matt Leinart, but I didn’t think he had what it took to be in the NFL I’ll bet Luck will win the Heisman next year if Stanford runs the table.

Also, the Carolina Panthers have been quoted as saying that the team would take him if he declared.  Now its a part of  the “What ifs?” in sports history, but could you imagine an NFL division with Josh Freeman, Matt Ryan, Drew Brees, AND Andrew Luck? Wow.

Another impact of Luck’s decision is that it moved Georgia’s AJ Green up in the draft pecking order, earning him a few more million dollars in the process.  This also benefits Carolina since wide receiver should be their top priority in the draft.

Its amazing the impact of a 21 year old student at Stanford.

Vick Haters Move On

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on January 6, 2011

Michael Vick’s story is one that is complicated, but it is time to let it go.

I think that Vick is a tremendous athlete, and an elite NFL QB.  He has shown in his season with the Eagles that he is, and always was, a capable NFL QB, despite not being a prototypical pocket passer.

It also shows how great a coach Andy Reid is, and how terrible a coach Jim Mora, Jr. was.  Jim Mora, by the way, is a clown in addition to being a poor coach.

Michael Vick really hurt the Falcons’ franchise, but for one year.  We all know about the Vick dog fighting saga and the embarrassment that led to Bobby Petrino’s cowardly midnight dash.

But it wasn’t a death kneel.   Arthur Blank proved why he is one of the best owners in the NFL.  He removed Rich McKay from being General Manager and brought in Mike Smith and Thomas Dimitroff.  The Falcons drafted a franchise QB (although I was of the opinion at first the Falcons should have gotten Glenn Dorsey or Darren McFadden, but that was why I wasn’t hired as GM).  Today, the Falcons are the top seed in the NFC playoffs, 7-2 favorites to win the Super Bowl and are having the franchise’s most successful 3 year run.

The Falcons have not only drafted well, but also brought in veterans Michael Turner, John Abraham and future Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez.

And we know to the nth degree about Vick, and his comeback season in Philadelphia.  But folks need to lay off Vick.  He has sinned, he has paid the price.  He served two years in Federal Prison (stupid, in my opinion) and has rehabilitated and re-entered the workforce as productive member of society.

I think it is time to let the sleeping dog lay (yes, pun intended and I just couldn’t refuse).

Especially washed up talking heads who are on their third network.

Tucker Carlson, in a tirade more against President Obama, criticized the President’s comments commending the Eagles for giving Vick a second chance.

Here is where Carlson really started to stretch:

But Michael Vick killed dogs, and he did [it] in a heartless and cruel way. And I think, personally, he should’ve been executed for that.

I feel like people like Nancy Grace, Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson are doing more harm to our society than a thug who kills innocent dogs, but that is another argument for another day.

But Tucker Carlson really got off on me.

Equating the killing of an animal is not the same as the killing of a human.  These PETA and Humane Society of the United States folks need to get a grip on reality.

Why didn’t Donte Stallworth get 2 years in federal prision?  Driving drunk, Stallworth killed a pedestrian.  What Does Tucker Carlson think is an appropriate punishment for Stallworth?

Capital punishment should be reserved for people like Gregory Favors, who is a lifelong leach on society who has a rampant history of violent crime and drugs, and recently slipped through the cracks of the system and killed a Georgia State Trooper over the holidays.  It should be reserved for people like Brian Nichols, the 2005 Atlanta courthouse shooter.    It is a controversial issue because IDIOTS like Tucker Carlson make idiotic statements that Vick should have been executed, and it makes the whole argument look silly.

Luck is Good

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on January 5, 2011

Coach Harbaugh said Andrew Luck was the best football player he had ever seen earlier this week. After watching pretty closely last night, I’m not going to dispute him. He has very few flaws in his game.

At 6’4″, 235, I could see him easily being a Peyton-like NFL QB. He’ll be a fun one to watch on Sunday.

And speaking of Harbaugh…is there a luckier man in America right now? He can name his location and price, and he’s earned it. Be curious to see if it’s Michigan or the NFL, but I’m doubting Stanford will be in his cards next year (pun intended). I think he should take the Carolina job, draft Luck first, and go from there. Not that I’m a Carolina fan, but I think that would be fun to watch.

Forgive my random musings on aTuesday. I’m simply still impressed with this young QB from Stanford.

Weis Leaving KC heading to the Swamp

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on January 3, 2011

After only one season back at the professional level, Kansas City offensive coordinator Charlie Weis is heading to the University of Florida in the same role as OC for new head coach Will Muschamp.  Reports surfaced early New Year’s Day and have been confirmed by media around the Gainesville area.  Weis will remain with the Chiefs throughout the postseason.  The Chiefs will play Baltimore in the 1st round of the playoff Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

It is unclear why Weis is leaving the Chiefs after a successful first season running the offense.  Rumors have surfaced of a falling out between Weis and Kansas City head coach Todd Haley.  However, Weis does have a home in Jupiter, FL so that could factor as well.

Weis is very rough around the edges and doesn’t have the best of appearance.  However, he is a solid offensive mind and did an excellent job with KC.  The Chiefs under Weis led the NFL in rushing and was 9th in total offense.  Weis also knows how to get collegiate players to the next level.  He will run a pro style offense and with his development of QBs it should weigh positively in the mind of Florida quarterback John Brantley who is considering transferring.
