Newton and Auburn are Toast

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on November 10, 2010

Joe Schad is reporting that Cam Newton and his father according to two Mississippi State sources wanted money to sign with Mississippi State.  Cecil Newton, Cam’s father, has been accused of using the money to repair a church he pastors in Newnan, GA that was under a demolition order by the city of Newnan unless immediate repairs were done to the church.

This story grows everyday and it appears that Auburn will once again see a special season fall short.  In 1993 Auburn went undefeated but could not play for the SEC or national titles because of probabtion from the Pat Dye era (by the way Mr. Dye is the reason Gene Chizik is in Auburn).  In 2004 Auburn again went unbeaten but started out low in the preseason standings and could not surpass undefeated Oklahoma and USC.  And this year looks as if another special season will be undone by scandal and impropieties.  Sad day for the Auburn nation.

Patsy Games in November

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on November 9, 2010

ESPN.com’s Chris Low was critical of several SEC teams for scheduling pasties in November.

I admit, it is easier to get up for a cruddy game in September than middle November, as a fan. You want to see the third team wide recievers going at it in September. Not as much on November 6.

But I don’t see why this is a critical thing? Every school gets at least one FCS team on its schedule…If you are Ole Miss you get multiple. Why not have them late in the season? The Idaho State and Chattanooga games were effectively bye weeks for UGA and Auburn before they played each other.

Auburn is the perfect example…they scheduled an out of conference game with Clemson on September 18. Now, they could have flip flopped the Chatanooga games and Clemson, getting the FCS school out of the way early on. But now, Auburn got a glorified scrimmage
the week before its second biggest rival game and has bascially two bye weeks in the three weeks leading up to the Iron Bowl. UGA has 2 bye weeks in the three leading up to the Tech game, and the Auburn game each year is always an important game late in the season (this year is no exception). Why not want a “bye” week or scrimmage game before you play them?

Georgia fans know the season results when you open up with a more “difficult” team. It is not embarrassing to save these money FCS games until November…it is shrewd scheduling.

Cam Newton is in Deep Doo Doo

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on November 6, 2010

Cam Newton appears to be up in his elbows in doo doo.  Being 6’6 that is a lot of crap.

The thing is Mississippi State was told first that if they coughed up the  jack, then they could have the services of Cam Newton.  Mississippi State balked and told the SEC, and I have a couple of thoughts:

-If the SEC had known about this for a while, then why let Newton play?  That makes no sense, and I would like someone to explain it to me.

-The good heart in me wants to say that Mississippi State did the right thing.  The cynic in me wonders that if Mississippi State wasn’t Mississippi State and had the $200,000 the pony up, would they?  The MSU atheletic department doesn’t have the resources that other SEC schools have…

-It was very generous of the Newtons to offer Mississippi State the “Mullen” discount of $20 K.

-Auburn fans:  if things are too good to be true, then they probably are.

-I am not saying this is related to Newton, but Auburn was playing with fire with some of their recruiting.  I don’t follow recruiting as much as Kensingtondawg, but I do know Auburn was being very gaudy with some of their stretch Hummers.  Sometimes bland and boring is ok…being flashy and showing off only gets you noticed.

It reminds me of the movie Goodfellas-Jimmy Conway (De Niro) tells folks to not buy expensive things after a big robbery.  What do these foolish mobsters do?  They buy Cadillacs and fur coats.  Then they wind up dead in a dumpster.

Auburn was very flashy with some of their recruiting, and it seems like that was just putting a bullseye on their back.

It will be interesting to see how this all turns out, but when the NCAA starts snooping around and asking for bank records, things can’t turn out good.

Thank God for Computers

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on October 26, 2010

I never thought I would be a fan of a computer having an impact on who plays for the national title, but I believe I have come full circle on this.  The reason is because of the clueless coaches and Harris Poll voters such as Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit who are voting Boise State ahead of Auburn in their ballots.  I’m sorry, but if you are looking at the body of work between these two programs and you vote Auburn behind Boise State you are inept and deserve to have your privledges stripped.  Bottom line!

Auburn has defeated four teams ranked in the  top 25 and two on back to back weeks in Arkansas and LSU.  Does anyone actually think that if Boise State had to head to Starkville the week after beating Virginia Tech they would have survived.  That’s a negative!  Boise has defeated one team in the top 25 and that is Virginia Tech who is barely in the top 25.

Not a single rational sportswriter or coach can look at the teams that Auburn plays and when they have played them and honestly say Boise State would be still unbeaten right now.  Hell, even Alabama didn’t make it through the slate.  Does Herby and Fowler thinks Boise is better than Bama?  Auburn played at Mississippi State, hosted Clemson and South Carolina in consecutive weeks.  They just finished traveling to Lexington, hosting Arkansas and LSU, and they just keep on winning, but the sportswriters and coaches think Boise should be ranked ahead of Auburn.  It’s beyond laughable!

So thank God we have the computers in order to bring some sort of sensiblity to the bias Boise loving hacks at ESPN.  And yes that means you Kirk Herbstreit and Chris Fowler.

Are Auburn Fans Asking for Forgiveness?

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on October 22, 2010

There is no doubt that Auburn has been the surprise and maybe the hottest team in college football in 2010.  They are 7-0 ranked #4 in the BCS and have as good a shot as any to play for the national title provided they can win out.  They also have a QB who may be the best in the United States and is currently leading the Heisman race.

But remember this is team is a coached by none other than Gene Chizik,  who according to Paul Finebaum in his column today was called by Auburn beat writer Phillip Marshall as the “worst hire in the history of the SEC”.  The fanbase was none too thrilled either according to this reception received by Athletic Director Jay Jacobs on his arrival back to Auburn after the Chizik hire was made.

So on the eve of the biggest game so far in the Southeastern Conference it seems to me a few beat writers and some people in the Auburn nation need to be on their knees asking for forgiveness.

BCS Standings Setting Up Bama Repeat

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on October 19, 2010

The BCS Standings were released Sunday night and here’s the rankings:

1.  Oklahoma

2.  Oregon

3.  Boise State

4.  Auburn

5.  TCU

6.  LSU

7.  Michigan State

8.  Alabama

9.  Utah

10.  Ohio State

Oklahoma once again proves the genius that is Phil Steele.  He picked the Sooners to win the national title before the season started when most had them barely cracking the top ten.  However, the team the catches my eye the most is Alabama.

The Sooners and Ducks are clearly in the best position, however I do not see both of these teams winning out.  Oklahoma still must play at Missouri, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma State.  Plus, a likely Big 12 title game against Nebraska, who I still feel is very good especially on defense.  Oregon still must travel to USC and Cal.

Boise State and TCU are #3 and #5 respectively, but the schedules for this team only get weaker so I believe there positions in the BCS standings have peaked.

I’m still not buying into the #7 team in Michigan State.  They still must go to Iowa in a game I believe they will lose.  They also must not get caught  looking ahead on the road against a dangerous Northwestern team this week.  But even if they win out their strength of schedule could hurt them, and I believe a one loss Alabama would leapfrog them.

Now on to Alabama.  I really believe they are in excellent shape at #8.  They have two teams ahead of them they will play, LSU and Auburn.  The Tide travels to Baton Rouge after a bye the first weekend in November, and I believe that “The Hats” luck is about to run out.  That leaves an Iron Bowl classic in Tuscaloosa.  Despite the emergence of Cam Newton, I do not believe Auburn has enough defense to hang with the Tide for four quarters.  Also, the strength of Auburn is the physical nature of Newton but the most physical team in the conference is Alabama so they matchup perfectly.  The Tide will also get a bounce in a win against what looks to be a mediocre SEC East opponent in Atlanta for the title game.  So, just one week after everyone was writing them off, I believe Alabama is sitting pretty to make a trip to Glendale, AZ on January 10.

Miami at Pittsburgh

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on September 23, 2010

Great matchup on ESPN for Thursday night college football. Both teams are trying to meet high expectations for the 2010 season. I believe Miami has a load of talent. Jacory Harris can make every throw you want him to make and his arm and accuracy or as good as anyone in college football today. Problem with Harris he is as good as any QB in college football completing it to the other team. Harris through 4 INTs against Ohio State and two were absolutely brutal killing scoring drives.

Pittsburgh never seems to meet the expectation level under Dave Wannstedt and so far it appears that could be the case again in 2010. RB Dion Lewis was expected to be a Heisman Trophy candidate after a phenominal freshman season, however the sophomore RB struggled against Utah and only had 27 rushing yards on 10 carries against New Hampshire of all teams! Pittsburgh is also dealing with major personnel issues as DE Greg Romeus will likely miss the rest of the season due to a disc issue in his lower back. On top of that, backup RB Jason Douglas and OL Keith Coleman are both suspended indefinitely after being arrested for DUI and aggrivated assault respectively.

This is a big game for both teams tonight. For Miami, Harris needs to get the ball to WRs Leonard Hankerson and LaRon Byrd and eliminate the turnovers. Pitt on the other hand must establish some form of a running game. If not it’s could be a long night as well as a long season for Dave Wannstedt.

Monday Observations

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on September 21, 2010

Who Dat Nation in Trouble?
I wrote last week that it would be interesting to see how the Saints responded after a pretty much lackluster win over the Minnesota Vikings on opening night. The Saints offense was a shell if its former self, but I mostly wrote it off as opening night jitters and fixing early season kinks. I now officially have some concerns with the Saints.

While the Saints defeated the 49ers last night, they survived four 49er turnovers and two deep inside of New Orleans territory. While on the face it would appear than any type of win against the Vikings and on the road in San Fran would be huge on its face, the Vikings and 49ers has yet to win and San Franciscio was embarrassed by the hapless Seattle Seahawks in Week 1. I’ve still got to see a whole lot more from the New Orleans Saints. They better show it soon, the Atlanta Falcons enter the Super Dome Sunday.

Phillies are the Best Team in Baseball
The Philadelphia Phillies are the best team in baseball, and are my pick to win the World Series. Cole Hamels shut down the Braves giving up 1 run in eight innings of work to take Game 1 of the three game set and stretch their lead to 4 games in the Eastern Division. All the Phillies must do now is go 6-5 the remaining 11 games while the Braves must go 11-0 to catch up. That ain’t happening! Braves MUST look at the greater goal, which is to win the Wild Card. With that in mind, it is imperative that the Braves not get swept!

The Phillies clearly made the move of the trade deadline when they acquired Roy Oswalt from Houston. The lineup of Hamels, Halladay, and Oswalt is the best in the game, and I believe will be impossible to stop come October. Before Oswalt was acquired there was some major questions among Philly fans about this pitching staff. Halladay was doing just fine, but Hamels was struggling. I believe trading for Oswalt upped the competetive juices in Hamels and made him better. Over his last five starts Hamels is 5-0 with a ridiculous 0.76 ERA, and since Oswalt showed up at the end of July the Phillies are 22-7 when either Halladay, Hamels, or Oswalt start. I’d say iron sharpens iron.

Yankees Increase Lead over Rays
In a night that former “Boss” George Steinbrenner was honored with a statue in Monument Park, the Yankees took Game 1 in their four game set with the Rays 8-6. Curtis Granderson led the way with 2 HRs. His last a three shot that turned out to be the game winner. The Yankees have now lowered their magic number to clinching a playoff berth to seven. The Rays were able to lower their magic number as well to nine, thanks to the Orioles knocking off the Red Sox.
