All Star Game Tonight!

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on July 13, 2010

How long as it been since the National League won the All Star Game? Let me put it into perspective. Bill Clinton had yet to meet an intern named Monica Lewinsky. Derek Jeter had 0 that’s right ZERO World Series titles. Oh yeah and the same can be said about Tiger Woods who was 9 months away from winning his first major title.

That could all change with the National League starting 15 game winner Ubaldo Jimenez. Jimenez has been nearly unflappable in the first half already pitching a no hitter with an ungodly 15-1 mark with 2.20 ERA. The American League will counter with young phenom David Price. However, I believe the nerves of such a young player starting in his first All Star game could prove to be a factor.

The NL bullpen is also very deep with arguably the hottest pitcher in all of baseball in Florida Marlins starter Josh Johnson as well as Roy Halladay and Tim Lincecum.

Expect the motivation to be with the National League. “This should be the year we end this drought,” Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard said. “I’m getting tired of hearing about the American League winning and how long they’ve won, every year for the last 13 years or what not.”

NL Manager Charlie Manuel also knows how crucial the All Star game can be. He has been involved with the last two World Series so he knows the importance of home field advantage in the October Classic. Don’t be surprised if that NL drought ends tonight in Anaheim.

All Star Break is Upon Us

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on July 11, 2010

Back from a little vacation in Europe and Asia, but the winners are still hitting. We’ve been happy to supply our new subscribers an All Star game special package so they can experience the absolute hammers going down at Odds Worth Betting. If you are not involved sign up! All Star Break is Here

While I was away the selections to the All Star Game were made. No problems here except for the selection of Atlanta’s Omar Infante. Infante is a fine utility man for the Braves. He is a .330 hitter and is arguably the glue for the Braves clubhouse. However, Charlie Manuel selected Infante over Joey Votto. Votto is one of the most dominant first baseman in the game hitting .322 with 24 jacks before the break. So, Charlie Manuel selected a .330 hitter who doesn’t even start for his current team, by the way, over a guy who is on pace to hit nearly 50 HRs and drive in 120 runs. Manuel’s intent may have been good, but not selecting Votto was a disgrace.

Well the annual Home Run Derby is Monday night and again we have players putting themselves over the good of the game and the fans. There will be no Pujols or Ryan Howard. However, MLB slapped the fans of baseball even worse. How about not selecting the Toronto Blue Jays Jose Bautista who leads the AL in HRs at 24. The only person more upset about this diss was David Ortiz who said Bautista was flat out “snubbed”.

LeBron to South Beach

As predicted by this blog last week, Lebron James would not sign with Cleveland as was being predicted by many major media outlets. Lebron is “taking his talents to South Beach” to join the elite tandem of D-Wade and Chris Bosh. However, the crux of this matter was not the solid core of players Lebron would join in Miami. It was Cleveland’s hiring of Byron Scott. When Scott was hired the breakup of James from Cleveland was complete. Sources have confirmed to me that James had a problem with Scott because of his strict no nonsense style, something he will not have to worry about in Miami.

Byron Scott to Cleveland Spells End for LeBron

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on July 1, 2010

The Cavs have reached an agreement with two time NBA coach of the year Byron Scott to become the organization’s next head coach.

With Scott deciding to take the job, I believe this a clear indicator that the Lebron James era in Cleveland is over.

Byron Scott is hard nosed and not the type of coach you expect to Cleveland to get if they believed Lebron was going to stay.

Scott is indeed the perfect fit for an organization in rebuilding mode. In 2000, Scott took over a horrendous New Jersey Nets franchise. However, in just one season he made that organization a major winner by taking them to the NBA Finals.

Once Lebron leaves Cleveland it is expected that the Cavs will return to their prior irrlevance. Therefore, Scott has been hired to keep the team competitive and keep the Cleveland fan base interested.

Sox are on Fire!

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on June 30, 2010

The Boston RedSox have caught fire over the last two weeks and have passed the Rays in the AL East and trail the Yankees by only one game. “Big Papi” David Ortiz hit a three run shot off of Jamie Shields who has now lost seven straight starts. Adrian Beltre also had four hits and John Lackey won his 5th straight decision.

The division races in both leagues have the potential to be as good as we’ve seen recently as 5 of the 6 MLB divisions have at the most only 1.5 games separating the top two teams. The All Star game is now two weeks out and they’ll when we’ll be ready for thrilling stretch run.

South Carolina Wins the CWS!

South Carolina swept UCLA on Tuesday night to win its first major baseball title in the program’s history. Whit Merriman hit a one out single in the bottom of the 11th to score Scott Wingo as the Gamecocks swept UCLA in the last game played at historic Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha.

Wingo drew a leadoff walk and advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch. He moved to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Evan Marzilli. With a runner at third and one out UCLA surprisingly refused to walk Merrifield and cleanup hitter Jackie Bradley Jr. in order to set up the force at every base. Nevertheless, the Gamecocks earned this national title after losing their first game to Oklahoma. South Carolina then won six straight including knocked off instate rival Clemson along the way.

Wild Day in Sports

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on June 24, 2010

What a wild day in sports yesterday! The United States scored a goal in the 91st minute to advance to the round of 16 in the World Cup. Now I have not followed the World Cup that closely. I am much too busy researching data to continue to make you guys $$$ in this baseball season as well as preparing for the upcoming football season. Nevertheless, yesterday’s victory was arguably the greatest in the history of US Soccer.

Longest Tennis Match in History
The longest tennis match in histroy is still on going between American John Isner and Nicholas Mahunt of France. This is the 3rd day of the match! The 5th set in its entirety has lasted over 7 hours with the two gentleman tied at an unbelievable 59-59. The match will continue today at 10:00 a.m.

What a CWS Game!

I hope you guys are watching the College World Series. This is the last year for historic Rosenblatt Stadium and last night’s game was one of the history books. Many people I talked to who have been attending the College World Series for years believe it was the loudest in the history of Rosenblatt.

With TCU trailing Florida State 7-2 heading to top of the 8th, the Horned Frogs rallied for 9 runs in the 8th to win 11-7. The rally was capped by a grand slam with two outs and a 3-2 count by TCU’s Matt Curry off of FSU closer Mike McGee.

TCU will advance to the play UCLA in an elimination game for the Frogs tomorrow.

Marlins Show Why They’re Losers

The Florida Marlins are one of the worst franchises in all of baseball. This an organization that plays baseball in a football stadium that is attended by about 8,000 people on a good night.

The Marlins are indeed building a new stadium, but in the worst part of Miami at the site of the old Orange Bowl. If Marlins executives think attendance is bad now just wait til this stadium is built in this trash part of town.

The Marlin organization continued their incompetence by firing manager Freddy Gonzalez on Tuesday night. Gonzalez is a guy who just last season led the Marlins to a winning record with the LOWEST payroll in all of baseball. The manager before Gonzalez was none other than Joe Girardi who not being good enough for the Marlins is now managing the most successful franchise in the game the New York Yankees.

Gonzalez could land on his feet at a better place as well. Many of my sources in the Atlanta feel that Gonzalez has a very good shot at replacing Bobby Cox at the end of this season. No matter what happens Freddy Gonzalez is in much better place which is out of the Marlins organization.

Pebble Beach Humbles World's Best

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on June 21, 2010

In a US Open mired my more of what didn’t happen that what did, 30 year Graeme McDowell became the first European champion to win a US Open since Tony Jacklin back in 1970.  McDowell fired a closing round 74 which was the highest final for a US Open champion since Andy North shot the same score to win the Open title at Cherry Hills back in 1978.

Early on Sunday the title looked to be a heavyweight title fight between arguably the three best golfers in the world in Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els.  That bout never transpired as all three shot less than stellar final rounds of 75, 73, 73 respectively.

Els’ round was particulary disappointing considering he got to -3 for the tournament but was 5 over on his last 10 holes.  The time is running out on Ernie Els to win another major.  He is now in his 40s with his last major title now 8 years old.  Els appears to be playing up tight especially with his putter.  He doesn’t have the confident stroke to go with his “Big Easy” swing.  The clock is running out for Ernie.

What happened to Dustin Johnson?

The longest hitter on tour was not ready for prime time.  While most golf analyst late Saturday night were ready to hand the trophy over to the 26 year old South Carolina native, the Golf Channel’s Brandon Chamblee was very wary that Johnson would hold on.  He was proven right!  How about a final round 82 that was the highest for a 54 hole leader since 1911!!!!  It will be a long while before Johnson recovers from this one.  Nevertheless, he is too talented to let this damage his career long term.

Tigers Resorts to Blaming Stevie!

After a disappointing final round of 75, Tiger Woods took little blame for his play on Sunday.  Instead he took it out on his caddie Steve Williams.  Saying he should have gone with his “gut instinct” instead of the advice of his caddie Steve Williams, Woods butchered a guy who has been in his corner despite his personal crisis over the past seven months.  Steve Williams has a lot of pride, and Tiger better be careful.  If James Jones were Steve, Tiger would be without a swing coach as well as a caddie.

Emotional Sunday for one of  Golf’s Great Gentleman

Is there a finer gentleman in all of golf than Tom Watson?  In a very emotional Sunday walk up 18 with his son Michael on the bag, Watson completed more than likely his last US Open at Pebble Beach.  The 60 year old has made us dream again this past year with his stirring effort at the 2009 British Open at Turnberry  as well as his charge to the lead in the first round of this year’s Masters.

Tom Watson is a golfer first and foremost and his respect for the game as well as its history is unparralled.   There may not be a finer champion and classier individual ever in the history of the game.  Here’s to you Tom Watson!
