It’s been nearly 20 years since the Pittsburgh Pirates have been this good, but here they are. The Bucos are 4 games over .500, 2nd in the NL Central, and are only 1.5 games out of first place! You heard that right, the Pirates are nipping at the heels of the St. Louis Cardinals. Also, don’t buy into the arguments that this Pittsburgh team is some kind of fluke who will crash and burn. That is simply not the case.
Pittsburgh is for real. They have one of the best young starts in the game in OF Andrew McCutchen who was dissed big time by not being invited to the All Star Game. Also, don’t discount the free agent signing of Matt Diaz who is hard nosed do what it takes player that was the glue on the Atlanta Braves team for so many years.
The strength of this team has been the starting rotation led by Charlie Morton and Kevin Correia, who is tied with the league lead in wins at 11. This team has built throught the draft and trades, which is finally beginning to pay off. The Nate McLouth deal was huge for the Pirates as it landed them Charlie Morton while McLouth has been mediocre in his stint with the Braves.
Also, don’t discount the hiring of Clint Hurdle as manager. The Rockies absolutely panicked when they went through a down year in 2008. He should have never been fired. He is one of the best teachers of hitting in the game and his success in Pittsburgh is proving his worth.
Bettors on the Pirates are also making big $$$! If you bet $100 on every game on the Pirates you’d be up $1,338 this year. The Pirates are a low market ball club, and the betting public does not believe they will hang around with this record much longer considering they haven’t made the playoffs since 1992. So expect for there to be value for Pirates bettors as the season moves along. If you are smart you will stick with the Pirates.
