Triple Crown and the Lack of Media Attention

by Las Vegas Legend, James Jones on September 27, 2012

This time next week we will know if history has been made in Major League Baseball.  It has been since 1969 and Carl Yastrzemski since there was a triple crown winner.  Cabrera leads the AL in average and RBIs.  He trails the Rangers’ Josh Hamilton who has 43 HRs to Cabrera’s 42.

Over the years most baseball pundits thought baseball would never have another triple crown winner.  Power hitters focus too much on hitting homers and not worried about average.  Contact hitters have good averages buy lack the power to hit 30 or more HRs on any sort of a consistent basis.  However, here is Miguel Cabrera with seven games left in the regular season with a chance to make his mark in the history of Major League Baseball.

The shock has been the lack of coverage.  With the NFL Replacement Ref controversy dominating the headlines, the lack of coverage is somewhat understandable.  However, I wish we would see a Sports Illustrated story or a front page headline on ESPN.com.  But we have gotten absolutely nothing.  It is a shame because the triple crown in my view ranks up there Maris’ 61 HRs and Hack Wilson’s 190 RBIs.  Cabrera’s possible achievement should be talked about much more.

The lack of coverage does reflect the dismal decline of baseball.  We are a football culture here in the United States, and the public is just not enamored with baseball or the division and wild card races.  It really sad that such an amazing story is being virtually ignored.
