What will Arkansas do now that the Bobby Petrino experiment has blown up in their faces?
Despite all of Petrino’s faults, the guy was helluva football coach. For my money he was the best coach in the SEC outside of Nick Saban.
It is very hard to win in Fayetteville. The tradition is not that rich, and it’s frankly in the middle of nowhere. Sure it’s near the talent laden state of Texas, but Arkansas usually just gets the leftovers after Texas, A&M, and LSU pluck their picks.
Unless Arkansas makes a homerun hire, I believe this program is headed back to the Danny Ford and Houston Nutt eras of pre New Year’s Day bowl games with 7-5 and 6-6 type seasons.
In my opinion Gus Malzahn is the best choice and according to Vegas odds the favorite. Malzahn is currently a 5/2 favorite followed by Garrick McGee at 3/1. Malzahn hails from Springdale, Arkansas where he is the former head man at high school power Springdale HS. His offense is exciting, and can build on where Petrino left off. But I do have a hard time believing that Malzahn will leave another Arkansas school in the middle of the season.
McGee is probably more likely considering where he is at UAB. Despite taking the job back in December, I could easily see McGee going ahead and blowing out of Birmingham. Legion Field, where the Blazers play, is a dump, and there is absolutely no support for the football program. The trustees only care about the University of Alabama that lies in Tuscaloosa. In all honesty UAB would probably be better off just shutting down its football program. In the back of his mind McGee has to know this so why not go ahead and abandon ship.
I still believe Malzahn is the best coach for Arkansas. The only way to get him may be to suck it up and go through the 2012 season with an interim coach. But with a loaded roster and the return of Knile Davis at RB, that may be too hard to do.
